LOWELL, Mass. – Paced by junior
Anouk Lalande's (Brussels, Belgium) two goals, five different River Hawks tallied points in a 5-1 win for the UMass Lowell field hockey team (5-3) against Quinnipiac (4-5) on Sunday afternoon.
"After being shut out on Friday, we talked a lot about our expectations in the attacking 30 and being productive, so for us to come out and score five goals against a very good team, I'm really happy with that performance," said Head Coach
Shannon Hlebichuk.
Sunday's outing marked Lalande's third multiple-goal game of 2018. Freshman
Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) added to the offense with her first collegiate goal, while senior
Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) chipped in with one goal and one assist. Sophomore
Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) registered a pair of assists and classmate
Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) rounded out the goal scorers with her second tally this season.
The Bobcats contained the ball in their offensive end in the early minutes of the contest, taking a quick, 4-1 shot advantage. However, the River Hawks seized the momentum, converting on three straight corners to pull away.
Lynes first opened the scoring in the 17th minute when she intercepted a pass from a QU defender before going top-shelf to put her squad ahead, 1-0. Lalande and Huk each followed with a goal of their own less than three minutes apart, as Lalande deflected a pass from Defourt on target in the 30th minute and Huk fired a hard, slap shot into the back of the cage in the 33rd, sending the River Hawks into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Coming out of halftime, Lalande finished a rebound off of a defensive save to extend UMass Lowell's margin to 4-0. The Bobcats were able to get on the board in the 44th minute on a corner chance of their own thanks to Alyssa Watson, but Berger closed out the scoring for the day with a tip-in from the far post in the 52nd to secure the 5-1 decision.
Sunday's contest marked the sixth meeting between the two squads. UMass Lowell now owns a 4-2 edge in the all-time series. The River Hawks get back to America East Conference action next week beginning on Friday, September 28 when they travel to Vermont for a 4 p.m. tilt.
