Inclement Weather Cancels River Hawks' Match at Longwood

FAMRVILLE, Va. – The UMass Lowell field hockey team's Thursday afternoon match at Longwood was cancelled in the second half after a delay of more than two hours due inclement weather.

At the 26:31 mark in the second half, the game was halted due to lightning. Rain rolled in soon after, and following a two-plus hour suspension, the weather had not moved out of the area and the game was called.

The contest will not be completed and therefore does not get entered as an official game.

The River Hawks jumped out to a quick, 2-0 lead just seven minutes into play. Freshman Grace Davis (Waterloo, Ontario) put the visitors on the board in the third minute when she tipped a pass from junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) into the top left corner of the cage before junior Morgan Irons (Bordentown, N.J.) finished a ball from senior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) four minutes later to create the two-goal buffer.

However, the Lancers quickly erased the difference and pulled in front with four consecutive goals in the next 14 minutes. UMass Lowell threatened to cut into the margin, recording the final five shots of the period, but Longwood would hold onto the 4-2 edge until the delay.

The River Hawks, who remain at 2-0 in 2018, now head to Richmond, Va. for a neutral-site contest against No. 8 Louisville on Saturday, September 1 at 12 p.m.
