River Hawks Defeat Hofstra, 6-0, in Tournament Championship

LOWELL, Mass. – Junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) tallied three goals to lead the UMass Lowell field hockey team (2-0) to a 6-0 victory against Hofstra (1-1) in the inaugural River Hawk Classic Championship on Sunday.

With the decision, the River Hawks improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2015. The shutout marks just the second of junior goalkeeper Eva Berkhout's (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) career, as well as the program's first back-to-back clean sheets since 2012.

"We haven't won a championship on this field in quite a few years, so to do it in a 6-0, convincing fashion was awesome," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "The team has been working super hard this preseason in trying to put together a full, 70-minutes of up-tempo, high-energy field hockey. They certainly did that today."

Senior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) chipped in with four points in the contest on one goal and two assists. Sophomore Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) added her first goal of the season, while freshman Lindsey Kilpatrick (Manlius, N.Y.) logged her first collegiate goal. Fellow rookie Taryn MacKinnon (Plaistow, N.H.) also notched her first career point with an assist in the outing.

The River Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in just the fifth minute, taking advantage of their first corner opportunity of the day. On the play, Huk dished a pass to Lynes on the right side of the circle for the shot that found the back of the cage.

The home team would then create a 2-0 buffer in the 17th minute, when freshman Grace Davis (Waterloo, Ontario) broke free from the pack and sent a great pass to the center of the circle for Lalande, who was set up for the one-timer on goal.

Coming out of halftime, the River Hawks continued to attack on offense, as Lalande completed her hat trick with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart. In the 59th minute, MacKinnon controlled the ball on a breakaway and found Huk in the circle, putting the River Hawks ahead, 5-0, before Kilpatrick finished a rebound off the Hofstra keeper's pads to give her squad the 6-0 decision.

Sunday's contest marked UMass Lowell's first ever victory against Hofstra in the sport of field hockey. The Pride still owns a 6-1-1 edge in the all-time series. The River Hawks will head out on their first road trip of the year, as they visit Longwood for a 4 p.m. tilt on Thursday, August 30.
