LOWELL, Mass. -- UMass Lowell Volleyball Head Coach Resa Provanzano announced today that the program has hired alum Vicky Wong (Tewksbury, Mass.) as a volunteer coach for the River Hawks.

Wong will work primarily with defensive specialists and pin hitters. She will also have responsibilities in practice implementation, match preparation, fundraising, social media, and alumni engagement.

"As an alum of UMass Lowell Volleyball and part of an NE-10 Championship Team, Vicky has been in the River Hawk family for quite some time, stated Provanzano.  "We could not be more thrilled that she is joining our staff this season, as well.  She is a good coach who knows the sport, but more importantly, she exudes a passion for the game and for UMass Lowell in everything she does.  We are excited and lucky to have her on the sidelines this year."

Wong was an outside hitter for the River Hawks from 2007-2010 and helped lead the team to its first NE-10 Championship in team history in during the 2009 season.

"I am so excited to be a part of the competitive culture that Coach Provanzano has established here at UMass Lowell," said Wong. "I have continued to support the program by coming to games and alumni events, so it's like coming home for me. I'm looking forward to getting to know the student-athletes and pushing them to be the best they can be. Coming from a developmental background in coaching younger  players, it will be a wonderful challenge to change the mentality to coaching strategic development and betterment at such a high level. I can't wait to see how I can be of service to the coaches, athletes, and university."

Wong has been a part of various collegiate and high school volleyball programs since her graduation. In 2011, Wong helped Emerson College to a first-place regular season finish in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) as an assistant coach. She has also helped lead high school programs as the JV and assistant varsity coach to sectional championships and a spot in the Massachusetts state tournament. She coached the Weston High School Girls Volleyball team to a Division II North Sectional Championship in 2014, and helped guide Chelmsford High School Boys Volleyball to a North Sectional Championship in 2015 and 2018.

Wong is still a competitive volleyball player, as she competes every year at USA Volleyball Nationals. This past year at Nationals, her team (Little Rascals) won the Silver Bracket Champions in Women's AA Division in Dallas.

Wong graduated from UMass Lowell in 2011 with a bachelors degree in Liberal Arts. She also earned her masters degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from the University of Concordia Irvine in 2017.
