River Hawks Defeat Hartford, 16-1, For First America East Win

LOWELL, Mass. -- Nine different River Hawks tallied a goal in UMass Lowell women's lacrosse's 16-1 victory over Hartford on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the first America East win of the season for the Mill City squad (4-8, 1-3), while Hartford fell to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play.

"I was really happy that our girls executed our game plan," commented Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Carissa Medeiros. "That's something we have been successful at, and things aren't always as successful when we have a plan going. I think today, what we were thinking on offense and defense, was certainly executed by our kids. A lot of energy. Our warmups were really strong. I was pretty excited we were able to come up with a 'W' and play together as a team."

Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) tallied a hat trick in less than eight minutes to give the River Hawks a 3-0 lead with 22:32 remaining in the first half.

Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) scored off a nice pass from teammate Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) less than a minute later to make it 4-0 in the first.

DiMoudugno tallied her fourth goal of the game off an assist from Dudley before Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) capitalized on a free position attempt to get in on the scoring action and five the home squad a 6-0 lead with 20:11 on the clock in the first.

Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) buried a pass from Finelli past the Hawks keeper to give UMass Lowell a 7-0 lead with 19 minutes remaining.

Almost 12 minutes of scoreless play commenced before Finelli and Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.), a minute apart from each other, shot bullets past the Hartford keeper on a free position attempt to extend the River Hawk lead to 9-0 with 6:42 remaining in the first.

Erin Hatch (Billerica, Mass.) snuck her way in front of the net and buried a pass from MacEachern into the back of the net for a 10-0 River Hawk lead.

With the clock ticking down in the first, Noelle Lambert (Londonderry, N.H.), thanks to a nice pick in front of the net from Sokol, juked a defender, caught a pass from Finelli, and quick shot it past the Hartford keeper for her first goal since her freshman season after an accident sidelined her for her sophomore campaign.

For the third time in program history, and first since Army West Point (3.8.17) last season, the River Hawks held their opponent scoreless in a half with a score of 11-0.

Sokol and MacEachern tallied the two opening goals for the River Hawks in the second half to extend their lead to 13-0 with 25:23 remaining in the first.

Hartford avoided a shutout after tallying their lone goal of the afternoon less than a minute later to make it a 13-1 score in the second.

Kyra Lowenberg (Amherst, N.H.) took a pass from Dudley and put a shot on goal with two defenders on her that snuck past the Hartford defender for the first goal of her career.

Caitlin Sanborn (Chelmsford, Mass.) capitalized on a free position attempt for the first goal of the freshman's career to make it a 15-1 game with 7:58 remaining in regulation.

After some stellar defense, Trasatti capped the afternoon scoring her second of the afternoon with 3:25 left in regulation.

Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) and Renee Gonzalez (Long Valley, N.J.) split halves between the posts and combined to stop two shots in the victory.

The win marked the largest margin of victory over an opponent and the fewest goals ever allowed by the River Hawk defense.

With Lambert, Lowenberg, and Sanborn scroing a goal against Hartford, the Mill City Squad has now had 14 different River Hawks tally a goal this season, five more than last season's total and two more than the program record 12 set by the 2016 UMass Lowell squad.

Taylor Sokol also tied teammate Rebecca Idson (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) for the program record for goals scored in a season with 25 in her two-goal effort in the win.

The River Hawks return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they play host to Harvard in a nightcap at Wicked Blue Field. Opening draw is scheduled for 6 p.m.
