BURLINGTON, Vt. -- The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team fell, 16-11, in the season finale at Vermont on Saturday afternoon. The result moves the River Hawks to 4-13 overall and 1-6 in the America East, while Vermont improves to 6-11 overall and 2-5 in conference play.
"I want to start off by thanking our seniors for taking a chance on a new program and being part of something that not many other college athletes get to experience," said Women's Lacrosse Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "This was a tough year for our squad, but it was an important one. We learned a lot about what it takes to elevate our level of play and how dialed in you have to be at all times. I know our returners will be working immediately towards taking the next step in the development process for next year."
Senior keeper
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) had herself a homecoming as she stopped 13 shots, collected eight ground balls and caused four turnovers against the Catamounts. The 13 saves helped propel her to 608 saves in the captain's four year career.
The River Hawks and Catamounts traded goals after
Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) opened the scoring in the contest less than a minute into the contest, followed by
Cameron McKelvin (Westminster, Md.) capitalizing on a pass from
Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) less than three minutes later and Trasatti scoring her second of the day at 22:48 of the first.Â
After Vermont tied the contest at three apiece, Trasatti recorded her third of the day off a pass from
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) before
Erin Hatch (Billerica, Mass.) and
Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) scored to make it a 3-0 River Hawk run and give the visitors a 6-3 lead with 13:08 remaining in the first half.
Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) capitalized on a free position attempt to silence a quick 2-0 run from the Catamounts to keep the River Hawk lead at 7-5 with 5:51 on the clock in the first.
Knotted at seven all,
Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) found Finelli shot one past the Catamount keeper.
Vermont scored the final two goals of the first half to take their first lead at 9-8 into the intermission.
A 3-0 run to start the second half for the Catamounts extended the home team's lead to 12-8 with 24:48 on the clock in the second half.
Finelli made something out of a stagnant offense and juked a defender to go one-on-one with the Catamount keeper from the left side of the cage and bounce one into the back of the net to make it a 12-9 lead with just under 21 minutes on the clock.Â
Trasatti scored her fourth of the game followed by Sokol's first of the game off a pass from Finelli to spur a 3-0 run from the River Hawks that cut the deficit to just one at 12-11 with 10:06 remaining in regulation.
Vermont tallied the final four goals of the evening to take the season finale, however, 16-11.
