NEW BRITAIN, Ct. -- Led by
Cameron McKelvin's (Westminster, Md.) four goals and
Renee Gonzalez's (Long Valley, N.J.) eight saves, the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team (3-6) defeated Central Connecticut State (1-8) on Wednesday afternoon, 11-6. The outcome marked the first road win of the season for the Mill City squad and the netminder's first win of her career.
"Overall we are happy to get the third win of the season," commented Women's Lacrosse Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "We had some underclassmen step up big on the field which we are excited about. We excelled on the draw which has been a big focus in practice. We've got a quick turnaround before UMBC and have a lot to fix, but we look forward to stringing together a full 60 minutes."
CCSU opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game on a free position attempt that fooled the River Hawk defense.
Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) tied the game up less than 30 seconds after Central Connecticut took the lead after taking the ball from midfield and barreling straight to the Blue Devil net.
Caster found the back of the net for a second time after taking a pass from
Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.)
McKelvin gave the visitors a 3-1 lead with 24:55 left in the first after
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) connected on a pass to her teammate for her first assist of the season.
After 15 minutes of scoreless play,
Kaylan DiModugno (Deer Park, N.Y.) capitalized on a free position attempt to give UMass Lowell a 4-1 lead with 11:01 remaining in the first.
Sokol got in on the goal scoring action thanks to a crisp pass from Finelli that Sokol was able to sneak under the Blue Devil keeper.
Back-to-back goals from McKelvin less than a minute apart gave her the first hat trick of the season for the sophomore attacker.
At the half, the River Hawks had not conceded another goal thanks to four saves from Gonzalez to give the visitors a 7-1 lead at the half.
DiModugno tallied a free position goal to open the scoring in the second with 26:54 remaining in the second half.
CCSU capitalized on free position attempt of their own to cut the UMass Lowell lead to 8-2 before McKelvin tallied her fourth of the day after collecting a ball rolling around the Blue Devil net and buried the ball past the keeper with just three seconds remaining on the shot clock to regain the seven goal lead at 9-2 with 21:05 remaining in reugulation.
Back-to-back goals in a span of just under two minutes for the home team made it a five goal lead for the River Hawks at 9-4 with 14:50 remaining in regulation.
A quick timeout for UMass Lowell proved ideal for the visitors after winning the draw control as Finelli took a pass from
Rebecca Idson (East Altantic Beach, N.Y.) and put it in the back of the CCSU net to give the River Hawks a 10-4 lead with 14:06 remaining in the game.
The Blue Devils scored on a woman-up situation that made it 10-5 with just over four minutes in the game.
Idson found Finelli again for her second goal of the game to make it 11-5 with two minutes remaining in regulation.
CCSU scored as time expired to make the final 11-6.
With Finelli's assist on the second goal of the game, the junior extender her scoring streak to nine straight games for a new program record. Finishing the contest with six points, Finelli also broke the single season scoring record with 35 points on the year, besting the previous high of 34 set by
Jane Dudley (Duxbury, Mass.) last season.
The River Hawks return to action on Friday, March 30 for a conference matchup with UMBC at Wicked Blue Field with opening draw scheduled for 4 p.m.
