LOWELL, Mass. – Sophomore
Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) scored the lone goal for the UMass Lowell field hockey team (8-9) in a 2-1 setback against Massachusetts (9-9) on Thursday.
Â
The River Hawks held onto a 1-0 lead inside the final six minutes, but a pair of late tallies by the Minutewomen proved to be the difference.
Â
"We're playing great field hockey and doing some really great things out there, but the breakdown in the last 10 minutes is frustrating," said Head Coach
Shannon Hlebichuk. "We need to figure out how to win one-goal games. We've done it to ourselves all season long."
Â
Neither side was able to break through the defense for a shot on goal in the first 13 minutes of play until senior
Carleen O'Connell (Madison, N.J.) fired a ball on target that was booted out of bounds by the opposing keeper. Sophomore
Sophie Kroeze (Laren, North Holland, Netherlands) added an attempt on target of her own in the 25th minute before junior goalkeeper
Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) made a save on the other end of the field to send the game into the break still scoreless.
Â
The River Hawks would break the stalemate in the 41st minute, as Lynes picked up a pass from freshman
Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) in the circle and made a spin move away from the last defender to pick up her seventh goal of the season and give the home squad a 1-0 edge.
Â
However, the visitors posted back-to-back goals in the final six minutes to steal the 2-1 outcome. Antonet Louw first dribbled through the circle and sent a shot into the lower corner to knot the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute and Lucy Cooper followed with the game-winner less than two minutes later with a one-timer from 10 yards out.
Â
The Minutewomen now own a 6-0 advantage in the all-time series between the two squads. Thursday's game marked the annual Kennedy Cup game between the two University of Massachusetts system schools. The River Hawks will wrap up the 2018 regular season and celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, October 28 at home against No. 15 Maine at 1 p.m.
