River Hawks Wrap Up Regular Season with Two Games at Home

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell field hockey team wraps up the regular-season at home this week, as the squad first welcomes in-state foe Massachusetts on Thursday, October 25 at 3 p.m. before hosting No. 15 Maine in the squad's senior day game on Sunday, October 28 at 1 p.m.
 
Kennedy Cup
Thursday's matchup will mark the field hockey installment of the Kennedy Cup Challenge between UMass Lowell and Massachusetts. The Kennedy Cup Challenge was established in the fall of 2018 and will be awarded annually to the university with the most wins in the cumulative season series between teams from UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst. John Kennedy is a longtime supporter of the UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst athletic programs. Kennedy holds degrees from both schools, Lowell Technological Institute ('70) and UMass Amherst ('76), with degrees in Mathematics (BS) and Accounting (MS), respectively.
 
Senior Day
Sunday's game will be special for the River Hawks, as the team will celebrate their five graduating seniors in a pre-game ceremony. Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.), Alex Loblundo (Acton, Mass.), Allyssa Moser (Mertztown, Pa.), Carleen O'Connell (Madison, N.J.) and Brooke Roberts (Medway, Mass.) will all be recognized.
 
River Hawk Rewind
UMass Lowell split a pair of games last week to move to 8-8 overall on the year and 2-5 in America East action. The squad first defeated New Hampshire, 2-1, in an important league game on Oct. 19 thanks to a pair of goals from freshman Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) before falling short against Dartmouth, 2-1, on Oct. 21.
 
Leading the Flock
Through 16 games, junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) paces the River Hawks with 12 goals and 25 points. Senior Torrie Huk (Mildford, Del.) adds to the offensive effort with 24 points. Jenna Berger leads the team with seven assists. Junior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) owns the 8-8 record in the cage, totaling 79 saves and a .745 save percentage.
 
Scouting Massachusetts
The Minutewomen are 8-9 so far this season. Last week, UMass defeated Northeastern, 5-4, in double overtime on Oct. 19 after falling, 6-1, at No. 12 Boston College on Oct. 14. Antonet Louw leads the team with 20 goals and 42 total points. Lucy Cooper has tallied a team-best 11 helpers. In the cage, Johanna von dem Borne has made 108 saves for a .706 save percentage.
 
Scouting No. 15 Maine
The Black Bears are 13-3 overall with a 4-2 record in America East games. The team will host Vermont on Oct. 26 before coming to UMass Lowell on Oct. 28. Maine faced a 1-0 setback against No. 22 UAlbany on Oct. 19 in its most recent outing. Casey Crowley and Libby Riedl are first on the squad with 10 goals each, and 25 and 22 total points, respectively. Three different Black Bears are tied with five assists each. Mia Borley, who has started all 15 games in the cage, has made 44 stops and has a .733 save percentage.
 
Series History
Thursday's contest will mark the sixth meeting between UMass Lowell and Massachusetts in the sport of field hockey. The Minutewomen currently own a 5-0 advantage in the all-time series. The Black Bears are 12-1-1 all-time against the River Hawks after picking up a 4-1 win on their home turf earlier this season on Oct. 12.
 
Setting a Standard
Anouk Lalande and Torrie Huk are setting a new scoring standard for the River Hawks at the Division I level, taking the top two spots on the team's DI record list for career points with 87 and 84, respectively. Additionally, they are tied for eighth on the program's all-time career goals list with 37.
 
Spreading the Love
Including the River Hawks 5-2 win at Colgate on Oct. 7, five of the team's eight wins so far have featured at least three different goal scorers.
 
Exciting Endings
The River Hawks battled to their first overtime victory of the year on Sept. 7, taking down Columbia, 4-3, in the 87th minute. Despite the 2-1 loss to Vermont on Oct. 14, the team has built a strong résumé in extra time, and is now 6-3 in games that have gone to overtime since 2017.
 
National News
Anouk Lalande is currently ranked 21st in the nation with 0.75 goals per game, while Torrie Huk is 34th with 1.60 points per game. As a team, the River Hawks are 15th in the nation with a .759 save percentage.
 
Hot Start
UMass Lowell opened 2018 with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2015. In both those games, the River Hawks were the first to score. The team is now 7-2 in 2018 (and 17-6 since 2016) when scoring first.
 
Stonewalling the Opposition
Goalkeeper Eva Berkhout logged her first career shutout in the 2018 opener against Bryant on Aug. 24. She then shut out Hofstra on Aug. 26 to give the team its first back-to-back clean sheets since 2012. This also marked the first time that the team opened the season with a pair of shutouts since the program's Division II National Championship run in 2010.
 
Weekly Awards
Jenna Berger tallied the first multiple-goal game of her career to lift UMass Lowell to victory against New Hampshire and earn an AE Rookie of the Week selection on Oct. 23. Berger first garnered America East Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 11 thanks to her game-tying and game-winning helpers against Columbia. Torrie Huk and Eva Berkhout opened the 2018 season with America East Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods, respectively, on Aug. 28. Huk led the team with eight points (3g, 2a) in two games, while Berkhout made six saves in back-to-back shutouts.

Jenna Berger recorded the first multiple-goal game of her career at New Hampshire (10.19) … senior Carleen O'Connell (Madison, N.J.) logged a career-high two assists at Colgate (10.7) … Jenna Berger scored her first career goal against Quinnipiac (9.23) … freshman Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.) registered her first career saves (2) at Sacred Heart (9.16) … Torrie Huk logged her second-career hat trick and first of the season against Columbia (9.7) … Jenna Berger tallied a personal- and team-best two assists against Columbia (9.7) … Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) registered her first goal of the season vs. No. 8 Louisville (9.1) … Anouk Lalande tallied a hat trick against Hofstra (8.26) … Lindsey Kilpatrick (1g) and Taryn MacKinnon (1a) each posted their first career points against Hofstra … Grace Davis notched the her first collegiate points with a goal and assist against Bryant (8.24) … Jenna Berger recorded her first point on an assist against Bryant.
