River Hawks Fall Short against Dartmouth, 2-1

LOWELL, Mass. – In a game that was tied for over 59 minutes, the UMass Lowell field hockey team (8-8) came up just short, as Dartmouth (6-8) took the 2-1 decision on Sunday afternoon.

"We didn't take care of our multiple chances in the attacking 25 and that resulted in the loss," said Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk. "Eva (Berkhout) was solid in the goal and our defense played well, but we need all cylinders firing to beat a team like Dartmouth. Today, we only had two firing, we were missing our attack."

Sophomore Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) tallied the River Hawks' only goal, while goalkeeper Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) totaled eight saves.

The teams traded shots in the early part of the first half, including a good chance by freshman Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) that was lifted into the opposing keeper's glove in the 20th minute. The Big Green's offense went on the attack with the final seven shots of the period, but Berkhout was solid, making saves on five of those attempts to keep the game scoreless at the break.

Coming out of halftime, Dartmouth fired off two more shots, but the River Hawks would break the scoreless stalemate on a corner attempt after almost 43 minutes of action when junior Morgan Irons (Bordentown, N.J.) dished the ball to Lynes, who dribbled through the defense and ripped a shot on target to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

Dartmouth was quick to knot the score at 1-1, though, converting on a corner on the other end of the field thanks to a shot from Katie Persin in the 50th minute.

The teams continued their evenly-matched battle into the waning minutes of the contest before Katie Spanos set up near the post and redirected a pass from Jocelyn Wulf up into the cage to lift the Big Green to the 2-1 outcome. Â

Dartmouth now leads the all-time series against UMass Lowell, 8-2. The River Hawks remain at home for the remainder of the regular season and will host Massachusetts on Thursday, Oct. 25 beginning at 3 p.m.
