River Hawks Close Road Swing at Maine, Host Vermont on Alumni Day

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell field hockey team will square off against a pair of America East Conference opponents this week. The squad first makes the trek to No. 17 Maine for a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday, October 12 to close out a three-game road swing before hosting Vermont on Sunday, October 14 as part of homecoming weekend.
 
Alumni Day
UMass Lowell will host its 2018 Alumni Day on Oct. 14 in conjunction with the 2 p.m. tilt against Vermont. Each year during homecoming weekend, the River Hawks welcome their dedicated alumni, along with their families and friends, back to Wicked Blue Field for a day full of festivities.
 
River Hawk Rewind
UMass Lowell went 1-1 last week to move to 7-5 overall on the year and 1-3 in America East action. The squad was locked in a back-and-forth battle with No. 24 UAlbany on Oct. 5, although the Great Danes scored two goals in the final seven minutes to take the 4-3 decision. However, the River Hawks closed the weekend trip to New York with a 5-2 victory at Colgate on Oct. 7. Junior Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) scored twice in that outing to lift her squad to victory.
 
Leading the Flock
Through 12 games, Anouk Lalande paces the River Hawks with 12 goals and 25 points. Senior Torrie Huk (Mildford, Del.) adds to the offensive effort with 22 points. Freshman Jenna Berger (Waterloo, Ontario) leads the team with six assists. Junior Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) owns the 7-5 record in the cage, totaling 57 saves and a .760 save percentage.
 
Scouting No. 17 Maine
The Black Bears, who are in the midst of a three-game win streak are 11-2 so far this season, including a 2-1 mark in America East games. Last week, Maine picked up a pair of 4-0 victories, defeating Vermont on Oct. 7 and Dartmouth on Oct. 9. Libby Riedl leads the team with 10 goals and 22 points, while Casey Crowley adds a team-best five assists and 19 total points. In the cage, Mia Borley has made 34 saves for a .694 save percentage.
 
Scouting Vemont
The Catamounts are 5-7 right now with a 2-1 record in America East games. The team will host UAlbany on Oct. 12 before visiting UMass Lowell on Oct. 14. Last week, the squad picked up a 3-1 win against New Hampshire on Oct. 5, but fell, 4-0, at Maine on Oct. 7. Landon Warren is first on the squad with seven goals and 14 total points, while Olivia Hurd boasts a team-best three assists. Sierra Espeland, who has started all 12 games, has made 59 stops and has a .686 save percentage.
 
Series History
The Black Bears own an 11-1-1 advantage in the all-time series against the River Hawks heading into their first meeting this year. Vermont leads UMass Lowell, 12-6-1, in that all-time series, including a 1-0 victory earlier this season.
 
Setting a Standard
Anouk Lalande and Torrie Huk are setting a new scoring standard for the River Hawks at the Division I level, taking the top two spots on the team's DI record list for career points with 87 and 82, respectively. Additionally, Lalande is tied for eighth and Huk is tied for 10th on the program's all-time career goals list.
 
Spreading the Love
Including the River Hawks 5-2 win at Colgate on Oct. 7, five of the team's seven wins so far have featured at least three different goal scorers.
 
Exciting Endings
The River Hawks battled to their first overtime victory of the year on Sept. 7, taking down Columbia, 4-3, in the 87th minute. The team has built a strong résumé in extra time, and is now 6-2 in games that have gone to overtime since 2017.
 
National News
Anouk Lalande is currently ranked seventh in the nation with 1.0 goals per game and 12th with 2.08 points per game. As a team, the River Hawks are 12th in the nation with a .775 save percentage.
 
Hot Start
UMass Lowell opened 2018 with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2015. In both those games, the River Hawks were the first to score. The team is now 6-0 in 2018 (and 16-4 since 2016) when scoring first.
 
Stonewalling the Opposition
Goalkeeper Eva Berkhout logged her first career shutout in the 2018 opener against Bryant on Aug. 24. She then shut out Hofstra on Aug. 26 to give the team its first back-to-back clean sheets since 2012. This also marked the first time that the team opened the season with a pair of shutouts since the program's Division II National Championship run in 2010.
 
Weekly Awards
Jenna Berger garnered America East Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 11 thanks to her game-tying and game-winning helpers against Columbia. Torrie Huk and Eva Berkhout opened the 2018 season with America East Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week nods, respectively, on Aug. 28. Huk led the team with eight points (3g, 2a) in two games, while Berkhout made six saves in back-to-back shutouts.
 
Notables
Senior Carleen O'Connell (Madison, N.J.) logged a career-high two assists at Colgate (10.7) … Jenna Berger scored her first career goal against Quinnipiac (9.23) … freshman Rose Cuozzo (Wilmington, Mass.) registered her first career saves (2) at Sacred Heart (9.16) … Torrie Huk logged her second-career hat trick and first of the season against Columbia (9.7) … Jenna Berger tallied a personal- and team-best two assists against Columbia (9.7) … Clara Defourt (Brussels, Belgium) registered her first goal of the season vs. No. 8 Louisville (9.1) … Anouk Lalande tallied a hat trick against Hofstra (8.26) … Lindsey Kilpatrick (1g) and Taryn MacKinnon (1a) each posted their first career points against Hofstra … Grace Davis notched the her first collegiate points with a goal and assist against Bryant (8.24) … Jenna Berger recorded her first point on an assist against Bryant.
