River Hawks Look Ahead to Georgetown, Pacific This Weekend

LOWELL, Mass. –
The UMass Lowell field hockey team will host a pair of non-conference matchups at Wicked Blue Field this weekend, as the squad is set to take on Georgetown under the lights on Friday, September 8 at 7 p.m. before welcoming America East West Division member Pacific to town on Sunday, Sept. 10 for a 12 p.m. tilt.
 
River Hawk Rewind
UMass Lowell improved to a 3-1 record so far in 2017 after picking up back-to-back overtime wins in Ohio last week. Junior Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) found the back of the cage in the final seconds of extra time to lift the River Hawks to a 2-1, come-from-behind victory at Miami on Sept. 1. Just two days later, it was déjà vu for Huk and the squad, as they fought to yet another 2-1 decision, this time with the game-winning goal coming less than two minutes into overtime in a neutral-site contest against Ball State.
 
Leading the Flock
Through four games, Torrie Huk paces the River Hawks with five goals and 10 points on a team-high 24 shots. Sophomore Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) follows closely with four goals and one assist for nine points. Senior Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) and sophomore Morgan Irons (Bordentown, N.J.) each add a team-best three assists. Sophomore Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort, Utrecht, Netherlands) owns the 3-1 record in the cage, totaling 29 saves for a .829 save percentage.
 
Scouting Georgetown
The Hoyas enter the weekend with a 3-1 record, having split a pair of decisions at home last week. The squad first faced a 3-0 setback against Rider on Sept. 1 before picking up a 2-0 victory against Lock Haven on Sept. 3. Cami Osborne is leading Georgetown with four goals for eight points, while Lindsay Getz chips in with two goals for four points. Helena Masiello is first on the team with four assists. Chloe Verwiel has played all four games in front of the cage for the Hoyas, boasting 20 saves for a .833 save percentage.
 
Scouting Pacific
The Tigers own a 1-2 mark so far in 2017 heading into a meeting at No. 2 Connecticut on Sept. 8 and their matchup at UMass Lowell on Sept. 10. The squad opened the year with a 4-0 victory against Michigan State before falling to nationally ranked opponents in No. 5 Syracuse and No. 20 Harvard. Emma Leach (1g, 3a) and Kriekie van Wyk (2g, 1a) are pacing the offense with five points apiece. Marlise van Tonder has registered 14 saves for a .636 save percentage and a 2.67 goals against average.
 
Series History
The River Hawks will be facing off against both opponents this week for the first time ever in the sport of field hockey.
 
Around the League
The River Hawks currently sit second in the East Division standings behind Maine (4-1). The team is also ranked second overall in the league with a 1.42 goals against average, 61 shots and nine assists. Individually, Torrie Huk leads the league in goals (5) and shots per game (6.0).
 
Déjà Vu
The River Hawks picked up back-to-back wins in overtime on Sept. 1 and 3 against Miami (Ohio) and Ball State, respectively. Both games came down to a game-winning goal by Torrie Huk and both were decided by a 2-1 margin.
 
Weekly Awards
Torrie Huk garnered River Hawk of the Week honors Eva Berkhout received Defensive Player of the Week honors on Sept. 7, having boasted a 0.90 goals against average and a .867 save percentage with 13 saves in two overtime wins. Anouk Lalande was named Offensive Player of the Week and River Hawk of the Week on Aug. 29 after leading the league with seven points in two games.
 
Notables
Eva Berkhout logged a season-high 10 saves at Miami (9.1).
