LOWELL, Mass. – An early goal by freshman
Katie Lynes (Oakville, Ontario) proved to be the deciding score, as the UMass Lowell River Hawks (5-5) outlasted Siena (0-9), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Wicked Blue Field.
Â
"It was one of those games where we were lucky to escape with a win," said Head Coach
Shannon Hlebichuk. "With all the possession, all the shots, all the corners and our lack of execution, we got away with one today."
Â
UMass Lowell finished the day with a 29-6 edge in shots and a 19-1 margin on corners. Sophomore
Tori Hannah (Plainsboro, N.J.) paced the team with five shots on the day, while senior goalkeeper
Kelsey Federico (Windham, N.H.) notched two stops in her first start of the season.
Â
The River Hawks controlled the pace of play from the start, taking an 11-2 shot advantage in the first half. The home squad would pull in front, 1-0, on a corner in the 10th minute when Lynes batted a bouncing rebound into the back of the cage.
Â
Hannah registered a strong attempt for UMass Lowell later in the period, as she broke away from the pack and ripped a slap shot, but Siena's Mary Crumlish knocked it out of play to keep the margin at 1-0 at the break.
Â
Coming out of halftime, UMass Lowell earned three corners in the first 10 minutes of action, although the home squad was unable to convert. The River Hawks kept play in their offensive end for the remainder of the period, but the Saints' defense maintained the one-goal buffer.
Â
Sunday's contest marked the third meeting ever between UMass Lowell and Siena, as the River Hawks remain undefeated in that all-time series. The River Hawks are now slated to open America East play on Friday, September 29 at UAlbany beginning at 2 p.m.
