LOWELL, Mass. – Torrie Huk (Milford, Del.) scored twice and
Anouk Lalande (Brussels, Belgium) provided the game-winning tally, as the UMass Lowell (1-0) field hockey team defeated the Colgate Raiders (0-1), 3-1, in both teams' season opener on Friday afternoon.
"We had set some expectations before the game and we certainly surpassed all of them, by scoring multiple goals and having good production and communication," commented Head Coach
Shannon Hlebichuk. "I was proud of the effort and the way we answered their goal right before halftime to really set the tone in the second half.
Huk and the River Hawks applied pressure early on, and finally broke through just under 10 minutes into the opening frame. Lalande provided the original shot, and Huk gathered the rebound off a defensive save and converted the tough angle goal.
UMass Lowell recorded seven shots before the Raiders could muster an attack on
Eva Berkhout (Amersfoort Netherlands). However, the visitors were able to even the score at 1-1 with 10 seconds left before halftime.
The River Hawks regained the lead on LaLande's lone tally with two minutes off the clock in the second half. On a penalty corner,
Katie Luchino (Freehold, N.J.) ripped a shot that got blocked and the sophomore sent home the rebound for her first goal of the season.
Huk added the insurance score with five minutes on the clock, firing a shot off the hosts' 12th penalty corner of the contest. The River Hawks finished the game with 13, while the Raiders failed to record one.
UMass Lowell set a Division I program high with 22 shots on goal, while Berkhout made seven saves, including five in the first half.
Christa Doiron (Worcester, Mass.) led the attack with eight total shots, six of them finding the target. Four individuals also recorded assists for the River Hawks.
