River Hawks Earn First AE Win, Trump Vermont 14-8 on Senior Day

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Hana Caster (North Attleboro, Mass.) tied a single season program record with six goals for six points, as the UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team soared to a 14-8 victory against Vermont for their first conference win in program history.

Caster netted four of her six goals in the second half, as the freshman is boasting 21 points (14 g, 7a) so far this spring. Junior Austin Trasatti (Doylestown, Pa.) matched a career-best three goals in the tilt.

With the win, the River Hawks improve to 7-8 overall and 1-4 in America East action, while the Catamounts fall to 1-14 overall and 0-5 in conference play in 2017.

"I'm pumped," said Head Coach Carissa Medeiros. "We have been in a bit of a lull but it all came together today and it couldn't have happened on a more beautiful day. It couldn't have happened on a more momentous day for our graduating senior. Certainly a lot of history was made today and I couldn't be more proud of how the girls played."

Prior to the game, senior Kristy Robertson (Kingston, N.H.) was honored in a special pregame ceremony, as the third-year program celebrated it's lone senior. The midfielder tied career-highs in ground balls (2) and caused turnovers (1) in her final game at Wicked Blue Turf.

Goalkeeper Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) made 10 saves in the outing, in addition to scooping up a game-high three ground balls. Juniors Ashley Horan (Methuen, Mass.) and Erin Hatch (Billerica, Mass.) led the way with three draw controls apiece, as the two teams each finished with 12 draw controls on the day.
UMass Lowell was hot from the start, taking an early 1-0 lead at 28:42 thanks to sophomore Rebecca Idson (East Atlantic Beach, N.Y.), who posted her team-best 23rd goal this spring. Classmate Kendyl Finelli (Southborough, Mass.) picked up the assist on the play, marking her career-best 13th helper.

The Catamounts later produced three different goal scorers to string together three consecutive tallies, aiding Vermont to a 3-1 edge and only lead of the game.

The River Hawks soon stormed back, out scoring their opponents 6-1 to gain a 7-4 edge at intermission. Caster led the way with two goals, while the squad picked up three of their six markers off free position goals.

The offense continued to roll for the home team, as the River Hawks increased their lead by seven, 11-4, to begin the second half. Caster picked up her second and third goal, respectively, while Finelli and sophomore Paige MacEachern (Lynnfield, Mass.) added to the fun with one score apiece.

With 9:02 remaining, the Catamounts were able to cut the deficit to four, 12-8, for the first time since 29:45 in the second. Vermont couldn't hang on, as UMass Lowell netted its final two goals in the closing minutes, securing its 14-8 victory.
