River Hawks travel for pair of AE matches to close out the season

UMass Lowel plays at UMBC on Friday and Hartford on Sunday

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: UMass Lowell owns a 5-19 overall record (0-10 AE) coming into the final week of the regular-season schedule. The River Hawks dropped a pair of road matches at Stony Brook (3-0) and Iona (3-0) this past weekend. 

Outside hitters Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) and Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) led the team last week with 16 kills apiece. Freshman outside hitter Morgan Given (Orlando, Fla.) also amassed 14 kills with a team-high .297 hitting percentage. Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) totaled 36 digs and 6.0 digs per set over the weekend. 

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC enter Friday's match with a 13-11 overall mark and a 5-5 record in America East play. The Retrievers have lost four straight matches, which includes a 3-1 loss at Binghamton last Sunday. Paola Rojas notched a match-high 18 kills to go along with .533 hitting percentage. In seven home matches this season, UMBC owns a 5-2 record. Carmen Freeman leads the team with 225 total kills on the season for the Retrievers.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS: Hartford owns a 5-19 overall record coming into the weekend, which includes a 2-8 America East mark. The Hawks are 3-6 at home this season. Hartford has lost six straight matches, which includes a pair of losses at Binghamton (3-1) and UAlbany (3-0) last week. Abby Nash leads the Hawks with 177 kills on the season, while Katy Henchy has posted 176 kills. 

THE SENIORS: Libero Malorie McIver (Austin, Texas) and outside hitter Masha Yelsukova (Santa Clara, Calif.) will be playing in the final two matches of their River Hawk careers this coming weekend. McIver has totaled 170 digs in her senior season and has amassed 630 digs in her four seasons at UMass Lowell. She needs three digs to set her single-season career record of 172, which she set in her freshman season. She has registered 10+ digs five times this season and notched a season-high 16 digs twice. Yelsukova has totaled 493 career kills with 93 kills in her senior campaign. She has notched 10+ kills twice this season. She has also notched 245 career digs and 90 total blocks since 2014.

LAST TIME OUT: The River Hawks fell in straight sets at Iona in its final non-conference match of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Hynes Athletic Center. The set scores were 25-18, 28-26 and 25-23. Sophomore outside hitter Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) registered a match-high 12 kills and a .346 hitting percentage in the loss. Freshman outside hitter Morgan Given (Orlando, Fla.) also chipped in with eight kills and a match-high .368 hitting percentage. Grace Burkett (Lakeside, Calif.), Katherine Claybaugh and Masha Yelsukova each posted six kills apiece in the match against the Gaels. Claybaugh also totaled 14 digs on defense.  Junior co-captain Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) posted a match 24 digs to pace the River Hawks' defense. Junior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) totaled a team-high three total blocks. Junior Delaney Mendez (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore McKenna Bova (Corona, Calif.) each posted 17 assists apiece running the River Hawk offense. The River Hawks as a team posted 16 kills and a .316 hitting percentage in the third frame, after a 14-kill effort in the second set.

AMERICA EAST LEADERS: Katherine Claybaugh's 3.23 kills per set ranks fourth among America East hitters and her 3.31 kills per set in conference play ranks third. Junior co-captain Erica Cappellino's (Penfield, N.Y.) 0.35 service aces per set is tied for fourth among AE players. Junior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi ranks fourth in the conference with 0.95 blocks per set and her 1.12 blocks per set in AE play is second best. Junior libero Lindsey Visvardis' 4.57 digs per set is the third best total among AE defensive players and her 4.6 digs per set in AE play is third.
