River Hawks host pair of matches in AE play on Homecoming Weekend

UMass Lowell entertains Hartford on Friday and UMBC on Sunday at Costello Athletic Center

SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKS: UMass Lowell enters Saturday's match with a 5-12 overall record and a 0-4 mark in America East play. The River Hawks own a 2-2 home record in four matches at the Costello Athletic Center, after a their most recent match, which was a 3-0 loss to Stony Brook last Saturday in Lowell. Junior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) and sophomore outside hitter Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) each notched a team-high 10 kills in the losing effort for UMass Lowell. Junior co-captain and libero Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) totaled a match-high 19 digs, which marked her 14th match of the season with 10+ digs.

Sophomore outside hitter Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) leads the team with 190 kills and 3.39 kills per set, while Visvardis paces the defensive side of the court with 272 digs and 4.46 digs per set. Claybaugh needs just 22 kills to set a new single-season career-high, after her 211-kill freshman campaign in 2016. Junior middle blocker Lade Adeniyi's (Springfield, Ill.) 39 total blocks (10s,29a) leads the River Hawks. Junior Erica Cappellino (Penfield, N.Y.) and Visvardis are tied for the team lead with 16 service aces apiece in 2017. Junior setter Delaney Mendez's (Phoenix, Ariz.) 340 assists and 6.94 assists per set are best on the team.

The River Hawks as a team rank third in America East with 1.44 service aces per set and their opponents .198 hitting percentage also ranks third among conference teams.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS: Hartford enters Friday's match with a 4-13 overall record and a 1-3 mark in America East play. The Hawks are 2-3 in their last five matches, which includes a 3-2 home win last Sunday vs. Binghamton. Abby Nash had a match-high 19 kills for the Hawks, while Megan Anderson ran the Hartford offense with 43 assists. The Hawks own a 1-9 record away from their home gym this season, which includes an 0-4 road mark. Katy Henchy leads the team with 131 kills on the season, followed closely by Nash (126) and Paulina Modestow (111). 

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS: UMBC enters the weekend with a 10-7 overall mark and a 2-1 record in conference matches. The Retrievers own a 4-3 road mark in seven matches so far this season and UMBC is 8-2 in its last 10 contests, which includes a 3-1 victory against Binghamton on October 6th. Carmen Freeman had a match-high 16 kills in the match for UMBC, while Kristin Watson posted a match-high 20 digs. Freeman has recorded a team-best 170 kills for the Retrievers and Watson has tallied 241 digs. Franchesca Reed has amassed 54 total blocks (6s,48a) for the Retrievers on the defensive side of the stat sheet.

LAST TIME OUT: The River Hawks fell in straight sets to Stony Brook (25-23, 25-16, 25-22) at Costello Athletic Center on Saturday night. Junior Lade Adeniyi (Springfield, Ill.) hit a team-high .500 percent and amassed 10 kills in the loss. Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) registered 10 kills along with a .269 hitting percentage, while fellow sophomore Katherine Palmer (Ellensburg, Wash.) added seven kills for a new career-high, a .133 hitting percentage, two blocks, and two kills to the River Hawks cause. Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glenn, Ill.) led the team defensively with 19 digs to go along with her three assists and an ace as fellow junior Delaney Mendez (Phoenix, Ariz.) assisted on 18 points while chipping in with three digs and an ace. UMass Lowell out killed Stony Brook 39-37, while the Seawolves held an advantage in blocks, 10-3.

AMERICA EAST LEADERS: Katherine Claybaugh ranks tied for second among league players with 3.39 kills per set, while Erica Cappellino's 0.39 service aces per set is tied for third among AE players. Lindsey Visvardis' 4.46 digs per set is the third best total in the conference. Claybaugh's 3.80 kills per set in conference play leads America East and Lade Adeniyi's 1.40 blocks per set in AE matches ranks second among league players.
