SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The UMass Lowell Volleyball team lost a pair of matches to host San Jose State (3-0) and Providence College (3-0) in the final day of the Spartan Invitational at Spartan Gym.
The set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-23 against the Spartans. The set scores against the Friars were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-17.
With the losses, the River Hawks drop to 1-2 overall on the season, while San Jose State improved to 2-0 and Providence upped its record to a 2-1 overall mark.
In the late match vs. Providence, freshman outside hitter
Katherine Claybaugh (Danville, Calif.) totaled a career-high and team-high 13 kills in her third career match for UMass Lowell to go along with a .290 hitting percentage and five total digs. Freshman
Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) also chipped in with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage. The River Hawks started strong in the opening set, notching 13 kills and posting a .323 hitting percentage as a team.
In the early match vs. the Spartans, Claybaugh once again led the way on offense with a team-high 11 kills and an impressive .364 hitting percentage. Bell,
Lauren Bennett (Wilmington, Mass,) and
Haley Shimon (Des Moines, Iowa) all tallied five kills apiece in the losing effort. Sophomore libero
Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) totaled a team-high 14 digs in a strong defensive effort for the River Hawks.
Claybaugh and Bell were named to the Spartan Invitational All-Tournament Team for their efforts over three matches on the weekend.
UMass Lowell returns to the court on Friday, September 2nd at the Holy Cross Invitational for a 2:30pm contest against Bryant in the opening match of the tournament in Worcester, Mass.
