River Hawks Continue 2015-16 Season With Spring Tournaments

LOWELL, Mass. – Head coach Ken Hughes and the UMass Lowell men's golf team look to ride the hot streak that began in the fall as they continue on with their spring season.

Their season begins on March 14 as the River Hawks prepare to compete in the Patriot Spring Invitational down in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

After the Patriot Spring Invitational, UMass Lowell has four tournaments slated for the rest of the spring: the Lafayette College Invitational April 2-4, the Bentley Invitational April 13, the Rhode Island Invitational April 17-19 and the Til Duty Is Done Collegiate Invitational April 22-24. These tournaments will take place in Florida, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Connecticut, respectively.

This spring, the River Hawks will tee off against top Division I competition, including Lafayette College, Bentley University, the University of Rhode Island and the University of Connecticut.

"We are looking forward to playing in great spring tournaments against some of the most competitive teams in the northeast," Hughes said.
Â
For the upcoming season, the team looks to focus on both individual and overall goals in hopes of reaching higher standings.

"Team goals and individual goals are intertwined," Hughes said. "Our players generally agreed after the fall season that we will have a goal of improving our driving accuracy as well as putting and short game play this spring. By accomplishing this, we strive to improve our stroke average as a team to under 75 per player. This will translate to better standings within tournaments."

The team has all nine golfers from the fall returning for the spring season. UMass Lowell is led by team captain Jonathan Burgin (Hampshire, England) and junior Ryan Paris (Haverhill, Mass.).

The best finish for UMass Lowell during the fall season was tied for fourth, which occurred on two separate occasions: during the ECAC Division I Men's Intercollegiate Golf Championship on Sept. 28-29, and in the NEIGA Fall Championship on Oct. 25-26.

Senior Brian Valencia (Marlboro, Mass.) led the River Hawks during the fall season with an average round of 76.4. Paris was second with a 77.7, followed by Burgin with a 78.1.
