River Hawks defeated by Stony Brook, 3-1 in season finale

- The UMass Lowell Volleyball team was defeated at Stony Brook, 3-1, in America East action in the season finale at Pritchard Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The set scores were 19-25, 22-25, 27-25 and 19-25. 

It marked the final collegiate match for seniors Elima Ahzi (Chula Vista, Calif.), Lauren Bennett (Wilmington, Mass.), Alexa Toth (Portland, Ore.) and Megan Young (Westlake Village, Calif.). With the loss, the River Hawks end their season at 6-22 overall (1-11 AE), while the Seawolves improved to 9-20 and 4-8 in America East play.

"This team has played with a tremendous amount of heart all season and today was no different," said UMass Lowell Head Coach Resa Provanzano. "Even though it wasn't the result we wanted, everyone fought hard and I was pleased with our offense. I was also happy to see the seniors push and play well to finish the season. The are a special group and we are all extremely thankful for their positive mark on our program. They will be missed."

The River Hawks posted a remarkable 16 kills and a .429 hitting percentage in their victory in the third set, while also posting solid numbers in the second set with 12 kills and a .286 hitting percentage. 

Freshman outside hitter Madi Bell (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) led the team with 10 kills in the losing effort. Sophomore Haley Shimon (Des Moines, Iowa) and junior Masha Yelsukova (St. Petersburg, Russia) each chipped in with nine kills apiece. Ahzi has a solid final match as a River Hawk with seven kills, a .500 hitting percentage and four total blocks. Bennett managed six kills and five total blocks on the day. 

Junior defensive specialist Malorie McIver (Austin, Texas) led the way with 14 digs on defense, while sophomore libero Lindsey Visvardis (Homer Glen, Ill.) totaled 10 digs. Sophomore Delaney Mendez (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Toth split the setting duties with  24 and 22 assists, respectively.
