River Hawks Take Fourth at ECAC Championships

SHERMAN, Conn. – After two rounds and two days, the UMass Lowell men's golf team finished fourth at the ECAC Division I Men's Intercollegiate Golf Championship.

The River Hawks shot a 318 on the second and final day, and shot a total of 622 for the tournament.

Fairfield University made a comeback to win the tournament with a score of 580, narrowly edging out day one leader Bryant University by one stroke. Siena College finished third with a score of 602, and St. Francis College came in fifth with 674.

"I thought we were very competitive," said River Hawks head golf coach Ken Hughes. "Our players have been very competitive against top competition. I'm very proud of our performance."

Junior Jonathan Burgin (Hampshire, England) led the River Hawks with a two-round score of 150. Sophomore Kevin Scott (Tyngsborough, Mass.) finished second on the team with a score of 151, followed by junior Ryan Paris (Haverhill, Mass.) with a 158.

Rounding out UMass Lowell was freshman Anthony DeCarolis (Leominster, Mass.) and junior Joe Vanaman (Kirkby-in-Ashfield, Nottingham, England) with scores of 163 and 169, respectively.

The low round for the River Hawks for the tournament was Scott, who shot an even-par 71 in the first round.

"We're working on improving every tournament round," Hughes said. "They're a great group of players and I'm proud of all of them."

The UMass Lowell golf team is back in action next Sunday, Oct. 4, when they travel to Apalachin, N.Y., for the Binghamton University Fall Golf Invitational.
