LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell Men's Golf first-year head coach Ken Hughes looks to lead a 10-man squad for a fall season that he hopes will build on the legacy of previous seasons.
Â
"I want to continue to build on the legacy of that our previous teams initiated by playing a most competitive Division I tournament schedule," Hughes said. "We're looking forward to representing UMass Lowell against established programs including Hartford, Binghamton, UConn, Rhode Island and Boston College."
Â
The team's best finish last season was at the NEIGA Championship, where they finished second out of seven teams.
Â
KEYS TO SUCCESS
Â
The golf team looks to not only hold themselves in a high standard on the golf course, but in all aspects of the college experience.
Â
"We will represent UMass Lowell with dignity and class and will produce a high level Division I athletic performance at each tournament and practice," Hughes said. "We will provide a first rate student-athlete experience not only on the course, but in the classroom.
Â
"We will be fit, focused and prepared for all our competitions."
Â
THE PLAYERS
Â
The golf team sees seven returning lettermen, led by team captain Jonny Burgin (Hampshire, England).
Â
Earlier this week, Hughes announced the addition of three new players: freshmen Matt Casavant (Reading, Mass.) and Anthony DeCarolis (Leominster, Mass.) as well as senior transfer Brain Valencia (Marlboro, Mass.).
Â
I enjoy being around these athletes," Hughes said. "They are all competitive, strong, skilled and smart. They're great teammates and wonderful representatives of their families, former coaches and UMass Lowell."
Â
NEW COACHING
Â
After a 12-year stint as head coach at Dracut High School, Hughes will be coaching on the Division I collegiate level for the first time in his career. Hughes welcomes the challenge of competing with and against Division I competition.
Â
"As competitors we always like to experience playing in tournaments against the best," Hughes said. "I look forward to preparing our team for this challenge and watching our River Hawk golfers excel."
Â
The River Hawks tee off for the Ryan T. Lee Memorial Collegiate Two-Day Tournament on Saturday, September 12.
