CATONSVILLE, Md. – The UMass Lowell women's lacrosse team dropped an America East contest, 19-2, to the UMBC Retrievers Saturday afternoon.
"We struggled in the midfield in the first half, and offense throughout the game," said Head Coach
Carissa Medeiros. "UMBC won 80 percent of all 50-50 balls in the first half. Despite holding them scoreless for the first eight-plus minutes, there was just no way we could be succesful without those possessions."
After the opening eight minutes went by scoreless, the Retrievers' (8-6, 3-1) Carolyn Jamison scored her first goal of the game to open up the scoring with 21:42 on the clock. UMBC used the momentum to open up an 11-0 lead at halftime.
Courtney Barrett (South Burlington, Vt.) made six saves, including highlight reel stops, in the first half for the River Hawks (0-13, 0-4).
UMass Lowell got on the scoreboard when
Taylor Sokol (Hopkinton, Mass.) capitalized on a free-position shot at 17:37, her 10th goal of the season.
Gabrielle Zorkers (Quincy, Mass.) added her second career goal, and second in as many games, with 5:38 remaining in regulation. Sokol won a draw-control and ran down the heart of the field and sent the pass over to Zorkers, who fired a quick shot past Kelsey Major.
Barrett ended the day with 13 saves, two shy of her career-high. Major stopped nine River Hawk shots.
Marissa Davey led the UMBC offense with four goals, and Jamieson added three goals and two assists.
UMass Lowell is back in action on April 14 at Brown University, under the lights at 6 p.m.
