River Hawks Finish Fall at NEIGA Championship

LOWELL, Mass. – The UMass Lowell Golf team looks to finish up their fall season strong this Monday when they compete in the NEIGA Fall Championship.

The River Hawks will compete in their first tournament since the Connecticut Cup two weeks ago.

Three weeks ago, the River Hawks tied for 11th at the Binghamton University Fall Golf Invitational, their best finish of the year. A week later, UMass Lowell took 15th at the Connecticut Cup.

"I was very happy with the performance (at the Connecticut Cup)," said head coach Ken Hughes. "We played a very difficult golf course under tough conditions. The players had to play 36 holes in one day and carry their bags and they seemed like they could have played another 18 if they had to. I thought the team performed very well."

"We were happy with it," said junior Joe Vanaman. "There were definitely better members out there. But we were definitely pleased with it. We played very well."

UMass Lowell's goal for this tournament is the same as it has been all season: score under 300 as a team in a round.

"I think that if we can get under that 300 mark, that will be a nice thing," Hughes said. "It means that our players would average under a 75 for this tournament. That would be awesome."

No matter the result of this final tournament, Hughes is pleased with how the team has improved over the fall.

"The players are hard workers and I think we're getting better every week," Hughes said. "I think we've progressed nicely through the year."

UMass Lowell tees off in the NEIGA Fall Championship this Sunday, Oct. 25, at the Captains Course in Brewster, Mass.
