Tenacious River Hawks Hold on for 3-2 Win

LOCK HAVEN, Penn. (Sept. 22, 2013) – The St. Francis Red Flash staged a late comeback effort only to be thwarted by a tenacious UMass Lowell squad as the River Hawks held on for the 3-2 win today in Lock Haven, Penn. The win is the River Hawks first since making the jump to NCAA Division I this season.

St. Francis struck first off a penalty corner opportunity at the 12 minute mark. The River Hawks tied the game in the 26th minute as Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Queensland, Australia) found the back of the net to tie the match at one heading into the halftime break. UMass-Lowell scored two quick goals to open the second half to take the 3-1 lead on goals by Kelly Freitas (Manchester, N.H) and Melissa Effertz (Oceanside, Calif.) Melanie Hopkins finished the game with 5 saves.

St. Francis, who led in shots (16-9) and in penalty corners (13-4) during the game, battled back with a goal with less than a minute to play but was unable to complete the comeback. With the loss, the Red Flash drops to 2-3 on the season while UMass Lowell recorded their first win to up their record to 1-6.

UMass Lowell will face their first America East foe of the season next Saturday as they travel to Orono, Maine to take on the Black Bears at 1:00 PM.
