Smith leads River Hawks with seven kills, four blocks; Binghamton next

Junior OH Hannah Schmidt compiled 11 kills and senior MB Emily Witsaman added 10 as the University of Maryland-Baltimore County defeated UMass Lowell, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in an America East Conference volleyball clash at the Costello Athletic Center.

Game scores favored the Retrievers 25-19, 25-13 and 25-10.

Junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) led UMass Lowell with seven kills and four blocks while freshman OH Lisa Tuggle (Colorado Springs, Colo.) added five kills and 10 digs. Junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) dished out 16 assists while junior libero Hannah Rey (San Diego, Calif.) led the defense with a team-high 11 digs.

Junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) chipped in four kills and four digs while freshman OH Ana Anadon (Carlsbad, Calif.) added three kills.

Witsaman hit .500 for UMBC, with 10 kills and two errors on 16 attacks while sophomore MB Krystal Mlemchukwu added nine kills while hitting .375 (9-3-16). Senior setter Mallory McIntyre compiled 27 assists and led the defense with a match-high 14 digs.

With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-24 overall and 0-12 in America East and hosts Binghamton Friday at 7:00 and Albany Saturday at 7:00.

UMBC improved to 17-10 overall and 8-4 in the Conference and visits Providence Friday at 7:00.
