Effertz Nets a Hat Trick in 6-1 WIn over UVM

River Hawks Pick up Win over America East Rival

Box Score Senior F Melissa Effertz' (Oceanside, Calif.) scored three goals and added an assist to lead UMass Lowell (2-13, 1-1 AE) to a 6-1 victory over Vermont (0-13, 0-3). The two teams met Friday night in an America East Conference match at Cushing Field.

Freshman F Georgia Cowderoy (Ashmore, Australia) started off the scoring in the 30th minute off a rebound shot by Effertz. In the final minute of the first half, Effertz made it 2-0 off a penalty corner, with freshman Eleonore Agneessens (Brussels, Belgium) picking up the assist.


The River Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead when freshman Jahna Driscoll (Green, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal five minutes into the second half. The Catamounts cut the lead to two, when Colleen Slaughter scored in the 48th minute.

UMass Lowell closed out the game with the next three goals. Effertz scored twice, in the 50th and 61st minute, and Cowderoy scored in the 53rd minute.

Senior goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) finished with four saves while Catamounts Stephanie Zygmunt and Emily Snowden combine for six saves.

UMass Lowell outshot Vermont 14-6 overall (12-5 on target) and had a 9-6 advantage on penalty corners.

The River Hawks are back in action on Sunday in Fairfield, Conn. when they take on the Stags of Fairfield University at 1:00 p.m.
