Providence Edges UMass Lowell in a Thriller, 3-1

Three players in double digits; River Hawks at Albany Friday

LOWELL (Oct. 13, 2013) – Senior OH Brooke Peterson (Del Mar, Calif.) and junior OH Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) combined for 26 kills, but it was not enough Sunday afternoon in a 3-1 loss to Providence College in America East Conference volleyball action.
 
With the loss, UMass Lowell slipped to 0-17 overall and 0-5 in America East and visit Albany Friday night at 7:00.
 
Providence improved to 10-11 overall and 3-2 in the Conference and hosts St. Peter's College Wednesday at 6:00.
 
Game scores favored Providence 25-15, 26-24, 19-25 and 26-24. UMass Lowell nearly evened matters in the second set with a 24-22 lead, but PC battled back to post the 26-24 win.
 
In the fourth set, the River Hawks trailed 20-16 but rallied to take a 24-23 lead behind three straight kills from Merrill. Junior OH Mackenzie Ziegler, who led the Friars with 13 kills, had two straight kills to seal the win.
 
Merrill enjoyed her best outing this season with 13 kills, 11 digs, three assists and two blocks. Peterson, who had a season-high 10 kills in Friday's 3-1 loss to Hartford, eclipsed that with 13 kills on .464 hitting (13 kills, no errors, 28 attacks).She also added a season-high 20 digs.
 
Junior MH Anisa Smith (Moraga, Calif.) added 11 kills, a season-high eight blocks and four digs while hitting .375 (11-2-24). Junior setter Kamiren Humphrey (Tucson, Ariz.) dished out a season-high 38 assists along with seven blocks, seven digs and a season-high six kills.
 
Senior libero Carolyn Eddy (Dracut, Mass.) led the defense with 15 digs along with five assists.
 
Ziegler also chipped in six service aces and five digs for PC while sophomore MB Lindsay Witt added eight kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter Jordan Wiesler compiled 28 assists, seven kills and 11 digs while junior OH Kelly Ashmore had five kills and 14 digs.
 
Freshman libero Michelle Cruz had a match-high 21 digs.
