High Scoring Quakers Pick Up 5-0 Win over River Hawks

NEW HAVEN, CONN. (October 13, 2013) – UMass Lowell River Hawks (1-13, 0-1 America East) goalkeeper Melanie Hopkins (Harwich, Mass.) stopped 12, but it was not enough as the high-scoring University of Pennsylvania Quakers stormed past the River Hawks, 5-0. The neutral site game was played in New Haven, Conn at Yale University.

The Quakers peppered the River Hawks early and often, with 12 shots in the first half. Hopkins held the team at bay until the 12th minute when Jasmine Cole struck for her 13th of the season. Sunny Stirewalt scored off a penalty corner in the 14th minute to give the 2-0 lead before Emily Corcoran upped the score to 3-0 before the half, scoring off a rebound of a Stirewalt shot and Hopkins save. UMass Lowell finished the half with 7 saves on the high-flying Quakers.

Penn was not done, storming out in the second half. Elise Tilton picked up her 8th goal of the season for Penn in the 41st minute of play. Elizabeth Hitti finished off the scoring for the day, getting one past Hopkins in the 56th minute to give the Quakers the 5-0 lead.

Penn finished the day with 28 shots, 19 on target, while UMass Lowell had 5 shots, 3 on goal. Hopkins surrendered 5 goals with 12 saves while her Quaker counterpart Carly Sokach finished with 3 saves. Penn held the distinct edge in corners with 7 to the River Hawks' 1.

America East newcomer UMass Lowell will play their second conference game of their first Division I season when they return home Friday, October 18 to host the University of Vermont Catamounts (0-12, 0-2 America East). The River Hawks have four games remaining on the docket in 2013-14: vs. UVM (10/18), at Fairfield (10/20), at UNH (10/25) and vs. Albany (11/2).
