UMass Lowell placed fourth in the Novice Four race and fifth in the varsity four to highlight the New England Rowing Championship Saturday on the Quinsigamond River.
UMass Lowell placed 19th among 27 teams in the final standings with 22.0 points, leading all Division II teams. Williams College won the overall women's title with 102.0 points while Holy Cross took second with 75.7 points and Wellesley College third with 75.0 points.
Bates (71.8) and Trinity (71.0) rounded out the top five.
UMass Lowell's novice fours placed fourth among 12 boats in 8:03.64, down from its time of 8:21.34 in the trials (sixth place), behind Amherst (7:54.15), Merrimack (7:59.34) and Connecticut College (8:03.58). Bowdoin (8:10.08) placed fifth while Wesleyan (8:16.05) took sixth.
Leading UMass Lowell's novices was freshman coxswain Rachel Paquette (Dracut, Mass.) along with freshmen Jenna Bueno (Methuen, Mass.), Erinn McLaughlin (Lowell, Mass.), Katie Judd (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Meredith Swan (Gloucester, Mass.).
The River Hawk varsity fours placed fifth overall among 10 boats in 7:57.84, down from its preliminary race time of 8:12.08 (third place). The varsity fours included senior coxswain Irene Cassidy (Methuen, Mass.), Bueno, junior Melinda Neale (Plaistow, N.H.) and seniors Amanda Murray (West Newbury, Mass.) and Kerry Siebert (Byfield, Mass.).
Bowdoin won the V4 title in 7:33.44 while Connecticut College took second (7:41.13), Amherst third (7:42.33) and Clark fourth (7:49.56). Brandeis took sixth in 8:13.22.
UMass Lowell enters the Dad Vail Regatta May 11-12 in Philadelphia.
