River Hawk Eights finish behind Vermont; Fours solid
The UMass Lowell varsity eight rowing team placed third behind the University of Vermont's 'A' and 'B' squads Saturday morning in the third edition of the River Hawk Racing Series on the Merrimack River.
Vermont's 'A' squad posted a winning time of 7 minutes, 3.5 seconds and edged out the Catamounts' 'B' team, the runner-up in 7:22.7. UMass Lowell came in eight seconds later at 7:30.7 while Franklin Pierce took fourth in 8:05.9.
Leading the varsity eights was senior coxswain Irene Cassidy (Methuen, Mass.) along with seniors Amanda Murray (West Newbury, Mass.) and Kerry Siebert (Byfield, Mass.); juniors Kim Haskins (Taunton, Mass.) and Melinda Neale (Plaistow, N.H.); sophomores Megan McLaughlin (Haverhill, Mass.) and Bridget Mahoney (Dracut, Mass.); and freshmen Jenna Bueno (Methuen, Mass.) and Rachael Piela (Amherst, Mass.).
UMass Lowell placed third in the varsity fours race with a time of 8:03, trailing Vermont (7:32) and Bowdoin (7:33). Franklin Pierce took fourth with a time of 8:27. Leading the fours were Cassidy, Bueno, Neale, Murray and Siebert.
In the second varsity four race, UMass Lowell finished the course in 8:17, second to Bowdoin (7:58). The second V4 roster included freshman coxswain Rachel Paqette (Dracut, Mass.), Piela, Haskins, Mahoney and McLaughlin.
UMass Lowell's novice fours suffered their first defeat of the season, placing fourth in 8:13.35. Merrimack won the novice four race in 8:05.4 while Vermont placed second in 8:11.24. Bowdoin placed third in 8:12.2 while Bryant took fifth (8:20.87) and Bowdoin 'B' sixth (8:46.06).
UMass Lowell's novices included Paquette and Piela, along with freshmen Erinn McLaughlin (Lowell, Mass.), Katie Judd (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Meredith Swan (Gloucester, Mass.).
“We rowed really well and highly disciplined but we need to cut loose a bit and race with near reckless abandon,” said head coach Veronika Platzer. “It's a matter of experience and confidence, both of which they continue to develop with each and every race.”
