The UMass Lowell eights ascended to No. 3 in the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/U.S. Rowing East Region Poll, released Wednesday.
Mercyhurst (Pa.), currently No. 2 in the CRCA/U.S. Rowing Division II Poll, ranks No. 1 in the East Region Poll and is followed by No. 2 Philadelphia University. The College of Charleston (W.V.) came in at No. 4 while Franklin Pierce is No. 5.
UMass Lowell also moved up one place from last week in the East Region fours poll, to No. 3.
“(The poll) is significant. It demonstrates that we're moving in the right direction,” said head coach Veronika Platzer. “This is an amazing group of kids. We're going to keep working the small boats and chalking up the victories, which will make our eight boat go faster and faster.”
Both the UMass Lowell varsity and novice fours earned a pair of wins over the weekend, both at home in the River Hawks Racing Series #2 and on the Quinsigamond River against the likes of Colby College, Coast Guard, Franklin Pierce and Assumption.
The River Hawk novices are unbeaten in three regattas this spring.
UMass Lowell hosts the third edition of the River Hawk Racing Series Saturday with the University of Vermont, Bowdoin, Franklin Pierce, and Bryant University. On Sunday, the River Hawks travel to Worcester to face Amherst, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Mass Maritime and Brandeis.
The intensity increases thereafter, with the Northeast-10 Regatta on Apr. 28 followed by the New England Championship (May 5) and the Dad Vail Regatta/NCAA Championship qualifier (May 12-13).
