Sophomores Ella Merrill (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) and Sierra Brown (San Diego, Calif.) combined for 28 kills as UMass Lowell defeated Assumption, 3-1, Saturday afternoon in Northeat-10 Conference volleyball action at Laska Gymnasium.

The win stopped a five-match losing streak for UMass Lowell which improved to 9-12 overall and 4-7 in the NE-10 entering Tuesday's match at Merrimack (7:00).

UMass Lowell was also expected to play Molloy following the Assumption match, but Molloy did not make the trip due to Hurricane Sandy.

UMass Lowell lost the first game, 18-25, but battled back to take the next three 25-23, 25-20 and 25-19. Merrill led the River Hawks with 15 kills and 14 digs while hitting .333 (15 kills, five errors, 30 attacks).

Brown added 13 kills while junior Olivia Parkins (Dracut, Mass.) dealt 34 assists to go along with six digs. Junior Kiana Raposo (Acushnet, Mass.) had 10 digs and four service aces.

UMass Lowell also received six kills apiece from juniors Brooke Peterson (Del Mar, Calif.) and Jamie Muntz (West Hartford, Conn.).

Junior Lauren Ostafin led the Greyhounds with 17 kills and seven digs while junior Mary Johnston added 15 kills and three digs. Junior Kristin Flatekval dished out 45 assists.
