Dipanjot Singh, a native of Evanston, Ill. (Evanston Township H.S.), will join the 2011-12 UMass Lowell men’s basketball team for his senior year, announced head coach Greg Herenda Thursday.
Singh will pursue a second undergraduate degree in psychology while playing out his senior year. He graduated from the University of Illinois-Chicago in May with a degree in kinesiology.
Singh joins a UMass Lowell squad which returns all but one player from the 2010-11 team which posted a 20-10 record (14-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year.
“We are very excited about ‘D’ joining our program,” said Herenda, entering his fourth year. “We are adding a good student, an athlete with terrific Division I experience and maturity. On top of those qualities he can really shoot the ball and has great court sense.”
Singh played two years at UIC where he appeared in nine games over the 2009-10 season and became a regular in the rotation in 2010-11 with 22 appearances.
After limited action in the first four games as a senior, Singh emerged over the second half of the season with averages of 5.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting .358 (19-53) from 3-point range in 19.3 minutes per game.
His season-highs included 17 points (6-10 FG shooting) in an 87-75 loss at Milwaukee; six rebounds in an 83-61 win over Youngstown State; and four assists in a 72-69 loss to Detroit.
As a junior, Singh featured in nine games with averages of 0.8 points in 3.8 minutes per game. He scored a season-high four points in a 72-59 win over Illinois-Springfield.
Prior to attending UIC, Singh enrolled at Marquette for one year and Hofstra University for 1.5 years, but did not play at either school.
Hailing from the same high school as former UMass Lowell standouts Stacey Moragne (2002-06) and Necus Mayne (2002-06), Singh was a two-year starter at ETHS and helped the Wildkits capture the Central Suburban League championship. Additionally, ETHS moved on to win regional and sectional championships en route to the round of 16 in the Illinois State Championship.
As a senior, Singh registered 13.0 points per game and set a school record for points in a quarter with 19. A four-year honor roll student, Singh was a member of ETHS’s National Honor Society and also a member of the volleyball and track and field teams.
Singh is the son of Gurinder Pal and Kiranjeet Singh of Evanston, Ill.
