Sophomore Daniel Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) and freshman Homero Morais (Somerville, Mass.) each scored goals as UMass Lowell defeated Bentley University, 2-1, Tuesday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer match in Waltham, Mass.
The victory was the third straight for the River Hawks, who improved to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the NE-10 entering Saturday's match at Le Moyne (3:30).
Bentley slipped to 4-2-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the Conference.
"We were looking to create good opportunities and try to finish them early on, like we weren't able to do in the last couple of games," said head coach Christian Figueroa. "We also won more second balls today than in past games, which was good to see."
Galvin has had a hand in six of UMass Lowell's 13 goals this season. He notched his third goal of the season in the fourth minute off an attempt from senior F Mohammed Saeed (Woburn, Mass.), who shot from the top of the box to be denied by the right post.
Galvin, however, was there for the spoils, slotting from the right side inside the left post.
Bentley nearly equalized in the 34th minute when junior M Matthew Leibowitz pounded on a defensive error and went one-on-one with sophomore G Chris Maierle (Wantagh, N.Y.), who thwarted the attempt.
"That was a huge save on a miscue on our back four," Figueroa said. "Chris made a great save."
The leveler came in the 44th minute, however, on a defensive error when junior M Riley Rodgers sent a volley to sophomore F Cody Osgood, who touched past an oncoming Maierle and sidefooted into an empty net.
Morais scored the winner in the 61st minute when senior M Bruno Bonicontro (Marlboro, Mass.) broke free down the left flank, cut inside and hit Morais who slotted inside the far post from right side.
Bentley held a 12-10 edge on shots but UMass Lowell led 6-5 on target. Maierle and senior G Matt Reynolds each had four saves.
