Junior F Dom Mondi scored the lone goal in the 24th minute as Assumption College defeated UMass Lowell, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer clash at Cushing Field.

The loss was the third straight for the River Hawks, who slipped to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the NE-10 entering Wednesday night's clash at American International (7:00). Assumption improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the Conference and visit Le Moyne Wednesday at 4:00.

Mondi scored the winner when sophomore M Jose Paulo launched a free kick from 15 yards inside the half, which UMass Lowell failed to clear. Mondi gathered the ball deep in the box turned and fired left-footed into the low left corner of the goal.

UMass Lowell nearly leveled in the 52nd minute when sophomore Dan Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) broke free down the left flank and slotted right footed agonizingly wide of the far post.

Senior F Mohamed Saeed (Woburn, Mass.) also had a chance in the 75th when his blast from the top of the box elicited a diving stop from Assumption goalkeeper Matt Wrenn, who parried to his left and out of play.

UMass outshot Assumption 12-7 overall and 5-3 on target. Sophomore G Connor Askins (Boston, Mass.) had one save while Wrenn stopped four shots.
