UMass Lowell junior Travis Kellegrew improved from an 85 in Monday's opening round to a 78 Tuesday, but fell short of the cut for the top 32 players at the 103rd Massachusetts Amateur Golf Championship at Wyantenuck Country Club in Great Barrington, Mass.

Kellegrew struggled in the first round, suffering nine bogeys, but birdied holes six (356-yard par 4) and 15 (389-yard par 4) to open with an 85. He proved more consistent on Tuesday, hitting 11 pars while suffering six bogeys and one double.

Colin Brennan, representing the Indian River Country Club, is the leader heading into the round of 32 with a six-under-par 134 (68 Monday, 66 Tuesday).

Kellegrew qualified for the Mass Amateur on June 14 when he carded a three-over-par 74 - which included five birdies - at the Cape Cod Country Club, finishing tied for eighth.

Kellegrew, entering his junior year, was named the captain of the River Hawks for the 2011-12 season.
