Incoming UMass Lowell hockey freshman Scott Wilson (Oakville, Ont.) was selected with the 28th pick (209th overall) in the seventh round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday afternoon.
The forward becomes the 33nd River Hawk chosen in the NHL Entry Draft and the fourth since 2000. The last UMass Lowell skater to be selected was former forward Chris Auger (Belleville, Ont.), taken in the sixth round of the 2006 draft by the Chicago Blackhawks.
Wilson totaled 61 points in 42 games for the Georgetown Raiders of the Ontario Junior Hockey League, OJHL, this past season. The talented skater scored 20 goals and 41 assists, including 14 power play points and three short-handed tallies.
"In my opinion, Scott has elite hockey sense and makes really intelligent plays with the puck," said UMass Lowell assistant coach Jason Lammers. "He has a really good shot, has a quick release and a keen eye for setting up teammates."
In 2009-10, he recorded 67 points on 24 goals and 43 assists. He then had a strong playoff showing, netting nine goals and eight assists in 11 games.
Wilson also represented Canada East in the World Junior `A' Challenge, winning the Silver Medal. Despite falling short of the gold, he netted a pair of goals in the 6-4 loss to the United States in the championship game.
Wilson will join first-year head coach Norm Bazin as they look to turnaround the River Hawks who had a 5-25-4 record (4-21-2 in Hockey East) last season.
