With the Northeast-10 Regular Season Championship on the line, UMass Lowell baseball visits Southern Connecticut State for the final two games of the season on Saturday. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
If the River Hawks sweep the set, they will claim the program's first NE-10 Regular Season Championship since 2003 and earn the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament. UMass Lowell is enjoying a terrific campaign with a 35-8 overall record and 18-6 mark in NE-10 play. The Owls are also red hot with a 35-4-1 record and 19-4-1 clip in conference contests.
In their quest for conference supremacy, the River Hawks have leaned heavily on their outstanding pitching staff. UMass Lowell has four starting pitchers with sub-2.00 earned run averages: Garrett Cole (Manchester, N.H.), Vinny DePierro (Tewksbury, Mass.), Jack Leathersich (Beverley, Mass.) and Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.)--the four are a combined 22-4 on the season. DePierro currently leads the pack with a 0.89 ERA and is riding a 17 scoreless innings pitched streak.
UMass Lowell's pitching staff has been so dominant, it's on the verge of breaking the program's record for lowest team ERA of 2.28 set in 1981. Through 43 games, the current staff has an ERA of 1.82.
On the other side of the equation, River Hawk hitters have certainly held up their end of the bargain. Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) leads the pack with 52 runs batted in and a .366 average. He is trailed by catcher Rob Noe (Lynnfield, Mass.) who has a .278 batting average and 33 RBI.
Southern Connecticut State is paced by Kyle Rosadino (Berwyn, Pa.) who is hitting .355 with 33 RBI and 39 runs scored.
The NE-10 Tournament play-in games will begin on Wednesday, May 11. The four-team double-elimination tournament will take place on May 13-15.
