No. 5 River Hawks Fall to No. 4 New Haven in NE-10 Tournament; Await Tomorrow's Opponent

Fifth-seeded UMass Lowell had its 13-game win streak snapped by fourth-seeded New Haven in the first game of the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Tournament double-elimination round. The game, played at Assumption College in Worcester, Mass. on Friday morning, was a 4-0 decision.

With the loss, UMass Lowell stands at 34-19 on the year, while New Haven improves to 33-15.

UMass Lowell will take on the loser of the afternoon game between Adelphi/Merrimack vs. second-seeded Southern Connecticut, tomorrow at 11 a.m. back in Worcester. New Haven plays top-seeded Assumption this afternoon.

The River Hawk pitching duties were split between Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) and NE-10 Player of the Year Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.). Both allowed just two hits, while Schafler went 2 2/3 and picked up the loss after allowing three runs. Schafler fell to 13-4 on the year, while New Haven’s Micah Stonesifer improved to 18-8 after throwing the complete game shutout. She let up just three hits to the River Hawks.

A pair of UMass Lowell miscues in the bottom of the third allowed New Haven to cross the plate three times before they added a two-out run in the following inning to make it a 4-0 ballgame. The River Hawks were unable to recover.

UMass Lowell tallied three hits on the afternoon, but were unable to convert the offense into any runs, while New Haven tallied four runs on as many hits.

NE-10 Second Team All-Conference selection Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.), Boris and junior LF Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) accounted for all three of the River Hawk hits on the day.
