Following one of the most dominant seasons at the plate in program history, shortstop Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) earned a spot in the 37th Annual New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game on Thursday, June 2. The contest, which showcases the top talent from Division II and III pitted against players from Division I, will take place at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, MA.
The College Division Team is comprised of 13 of the region's standout D-II players and 16 of D-III's top seniors. The University Division Team, to be released later this week, will feature standout D-I players from the region.
Kneeland will appear in the All-Star Game for the second consecutive, which took place at Fenway Park last year. The junior led UMass Lowell to a 37-14 record and berths in the Northeast-10 and NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, he has already been recognized by four organizations including being named to the NE-10 All-Conference First Team and American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region First Team.
Despite moving from third base to shortstop prior to the season's start, Kneeland led the River Hawks with a .328 batting average, six home runs and 53 runs batted in. He became the first UMass Lowell player to eclipse 50 RBI in a season since the NE-10 switched to wood bats in 2003.
In addition, Kneeland led the club in hits (64), doubles (14), total bases (100), slugging percentage (.513) and on-base percentage (.409).
The announcement marks the third straight season a River Hawk has been named to the NEIBA All-Star Game as pitcher Jack Leathersich (Beverly, Mass.) appeared in the contest as a freshman in 2009. The gate will open at 6 p.m. and tickets will cost $5. For directions and other information, please visit the official website of the Lowell Spinners.
