Lizzy Ales (Arlington, Mass.), a senior on the UMass Lowell field hockey team, was named to the Capital One District 1 College Division At-Large All-Academic Third Team, announced by College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Monday.
The Capital One College Division At-Large All-Academic Teams encompass student-athletes from NCAA Divisions II and III in sports such as field hockey, golf, ice hockey, fencing, gymnastics, lacrosse and swimming among others.
To be eligible, student-athletes, sophomores and older, must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and be a significant contributor on her team.
“Lizzy set two goals early on: to win a national championship and to become a nurse,” said head coach Shannon Hlebichuk. “She is a goal-oriented young woman who balanced the demands of nursing and her athletic commitments.
“She is well-deserving of this award for her hard work on and off the field,” Hlebichuk added. “This is the perfect award to close out a fantastic four years Lizzy has given the field hockey program.”
The honor is the latest of several for Ales this season. Earlier, she was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II National Academic Squad for the fourth straight year, as well as the Northeast-10 Conference 2010 Field Hockey All-Academic Team.
Additionally, Ales has also earned a place on the NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll from her sophomore year to present.
A nursing major, Ales has maintained a 3.60. She was a two-year starter in the midfield for the River Hawks and compiled 10 goals and one assist this season. She completed a hat trick in a 10-0 victory over Saint Michael’s as well as a pair of goals in a 9-0 win at Assumption.
UMass Lowell captured its second NCAA Championship in six years on Dec. 4 when it defeated Shippensburg University, 1-0, in Louisville, Ky. The victory capped a 24-0 season in which the River Hawks also won the NE-10 Tournament and regular season titles.
Ales is the daughter of Arthur and Mikell Ales of Arlington, Mass.
