Sophomore Evan White (Tewksbury, Mass.) gave arguably the greatest single-day performance in UMass Lowell history as he captured three events and led the River Hawks to fourth place Saturday at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championship at Southern Connecticut State’s Jess Dow Field.
UMass Lowell compiled 77 points – including 30 by White – to place fourth while Southern Connecticut won the title with 110 points. Northeastern compiled 86.50 points while the University of Rhode Island placed third with 82 points.
Bates College (44) edged out Stonehill (43) while Boston College (40.5), Vermont (38), New Hampshire (34) and Springfield (24) made up the top 10. The top eight athletes in each event earned All-New England honors.
On Friday, junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, Mass.) captured the 5,000 meters (14:45.37) while sophomore Jeff Veiga (Lowell, Mass.) captured the 10,000 meters in (31:05.76). MacDonald also took third in the 1,500 meters Saturday in 3:49.99 and, along with White and Veiga, accounted for 56 of UMass Lowell’s 77 points.
White not only captured three events but also set a school record in the 200 meter dash and improved his and UMass Lowell’s standing in the NCAA Championship in the 4X400 meter relay and the 400 meter dash.
White captured the 200 meters in 21.19 seconds – edging his previous school record of 21.21 set on Apr. 23 – and improved to 22nd on the latest NCAA Division II list. He moved on to capture the 400 meter dash in a personal-best 46.55 seconds (down from 46.71 at last week’s Northeast-10 Conference Championship) as he remains second on the Division II list.
Sophomore Craig Bennett (Milton, Mass.) placed third in the 400 meters in 47.66 seconds to earn All-New England honors for the second straight year.
White capped a busy day by running a 46.4-second anchor leg on UMass Lowell’s 4X400 meter relay team, which posted a sterling 3:10.69 to move from 10th to ninth in the country.
Joining White in the 4X400 was Bennett, who led off with a 47.6-second split. He was followed by senior Donte Brown (Raynham, Mass.) who ran a 47.4 leg and freshman Keith Lewis (Nashua, N.H.), who ran a 48.2 split.
Brown also earned All-New England status in the 400 meter hurdles as he finished runner-up in 52.87 seconds, just behind Jonathan Hall of Northeastern who won in 51.77.
Seniors Cory Murray (Methuen, Mass.) and William Nguidjoi (Lawrence, Mass.) each captured All-New England honors to fuel UMass Lowell’s effort. Murray earned the honor for the fourth straight year as he took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 53 feet, 5.75 inches.
Nguidjoi placed fifth in the triple jump and earned All-New England status for the second straight year with a throw of 46’ 11.75’’.
Other results included that of UMass Lowell’s 4X800 meter relay team which placed ninth in 7:54.74, one place shy of All-New England honors. Freshman Scott Boiko (Chelmsford, Mass.) led off with a 1:54.6 split while freshman David Brown (Chelmsford, Mass.) followed in 2:01.0; junior Danny Wang (Haverhill, Mass.) in 1:58.0 and freshman Clint Burns (Whitman, Mass.) in 2:00.0.
Freshman Chris Estrella (Lowell, Mass.) placed 10th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:35.65.
UMass Lowell caps the regular season Saturday as it hosts the New Balance Twilight Invitational.
