Fourth seeded UMass Lowell baseball fell to first-seed Southern Connecticut State, 4-3, in 10 innings in the first game of the Northeast-10 Championship Weekend.
The loss, UMass Lowell's first in extra innings this season, drops the River Hawks record to 36-11 on the season. Southern Connecticut improves to 38-4.
UMass Lowell threatened in each of the first two innings, putting a pair of runners on base before having the frame cut short.
The Owls returned the favor in the bottom of the second, advancing runners to first and third with no outs. Starter Taylor Robinson (Haverhill, Mass.) fanned back-to-back batters before getting the last player to pop up to third base, holding the game in a scoreless tie.
Southern Connecticut State pushed across a run in the third however, plating a runner on a groundout by Nick DeProspo (Worcester, Mass.).
The Owls then expanded their lead to 3-0 in the sixth, starting with an RBI double to center by Ryan Geffert (Plymouth, Pa.). He was then singled home shortly after by Bryan Dorsey (Cheshire, Conn.).
Robinson left after six innings, allowing seven hits, three runs and one walk. The righty fanned five batters. Bryant Guilmette (Hopkinton, Mass.) took over on the mound, holding Southern Connecticut scoreless over the next three innings.
UMass Lowell's offense finally got going in the eighth, plating a pair of runs. Sean Burns (Colchester, Vt.) lined a one out single and advanced on a wild pitch. Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) pushed a single through the right side to bring Burns home. Kneeland scored a few batters later on an RBI groundout by Rob Noe (Lynnfield, Mass.).
The comeback was completed in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) roped an RBI single into right-center, scoring Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) from second base.
The game remained tied at 3-3, dragging into the 10th inning as Dustin Ramey (Kingston, N.H.) took over on the mound. The Owls put a pair of runners on base quickly however, putting pressure on the River Hawk defense. With two outs, A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass.) fired a pitch into the left-center gap for the game-winning hit.
