Junior Cam Kneeland (Rowley, Mass.) totaled seven RBI in a 13-3 win over Saint Anselm on Thursday afternoon at Sullivan's Field. The victory complete UMass Lowell's season sweep of the Hawks and marked its 10th win in the last 11 games.
The River Hawks improved to 22-3 on the season and 9-1 in the Northeast-10. Saint Anselm slides to 11-14 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
The River Hawks got off to a fast start, scoring twice in the first inning. Kneeland slugged a two-run homer to left center following a Matt Jacobs (Hudson, Mass.) leadoff walk.
After UMass Lowell picked up two more runs in the fourth on RBI singles from Bryan Deuel (Webster, N.Y.) and Kneeland, Saint Anselm scored three runs to cut the River Hawks' lead to 4-3.
The Hawks would never get closer as UMass Lowell pulled away with nine more runs over the next few innings. Among the key hits, Kneeland and Mark Sanborn (Hopkinton, Mass.) each tallied two-run singles.
For the day, Kneeland was outstanding with a 5-for-5 showing at the plate and seven RBI. The talented shortstop now has a team-high 33 RBI on the season. Pat Devlin (Tewksbury, Mass.) was also strong with two hits, two runs scored and four walks.
Freshman Mike Calzetta (Lawrence, Mass.) was strong on the mound, picking up his third win of the season. Calzetta allowed five hits, three runs and two walks over seven innings of work. Tyler Toyfair (Agawam, Mass.) and Mike Sloban (Merrimac, N.H.) combined for a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game.
With today's contest in the rear view mirror, UMass Lowell gears up for a double-header on Saturday with Adelphi at LeLacheur Park. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
