A three-run home run by junior Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) in the seventh inning lifted UMass Lowell from a 3-2 deficit to an eventual 5-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against Southern New Hampshire in Manchester on Wednesday afternoon. The River Hawks split with the Penmen in the pair of Northeast-10 Conference games.
UMass Lowell currently stands at 16-12 overall with a 2-4 mark in conference play, while Southern New Hampshire finished the day 6-14 on the year with a 4-2 clip in NE-10 action.
In the first game of the afternoon, the River Hawks picked up a 2-1 lead in the first after Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) hit a two-run double to left center. The squad went on to lead by as many as four runs (6-2) in the top of the fourth on a three-run homerun by SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.).
Later in the inning, however, the Penmen responded with four runs of their own to tie the game at six apiece, a score that carried into the bottom of the seventh. Before the game was sent into extra innings, though, Morgan Farmer hit a walk-off single to score Jessica Berardi and earn the team's sixth win of the year.
Boris picked up her ninth loss of the year, pitching the complete game and allowing seven runs on 11 hits. She struck out four and walked as many in the game. SNHU's Kelsey Griffin now stands at 4-3 on the year after her complete-game, seven-hit performance. She struck out five River Hawks in the game.
Trailing 3-2 entering the seventh inning of the second game, the River Hawks had runners on second and third and just one out on the board. Guy and sophomore 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) had walked to get on base earlier in the inning and Boris stepped up to the plate, blasting a three run homer to put her squad up 5-3.
The River Hawks held onto the lead through the bottom of the inning, picking up the come-from-behind win for their 16th victory of the year.
Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) pitched five solid innings for the River Hawks, allowing three runs on five hits before being relieved by Boris, who picked up her 11th win of the year after pitching two scoreless innings. Southern New Hampshire's Dolores Mattice fell to 2-4 on the year with the loss.
Guy finished the day 3-5 with three runs, including a double and a home run. She tallied three RBI on the afternoon, as well. Ford recorded a pair of doubles over the two-game set, while Katie Mazure (Burlington, Mass.) went 2-6 from the plate with a home run, while MacKenzie blasted her first longball of the year, as well.
