Freshman 3B Ali Ferraro (Kingston, N.Y.) batted 4 for 5 with two RBI while Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) went 4 for 8 with two RBI to lead UMass Lowell to a sweep of Pace University, 4-1 and 6-2, Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader.
The sweep marked the ninth and 10th straight victories for UMass Lowell, which improved to 31-18 overall and 17-10 in the NE-10 and wrap up the regular season Sunday at Adelphi (12:00).
Pace slipped to 19-24 overall and 11-16 in the Conference and hosts Merrimack Sunday at 12:00.
Senior P Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) highlighted the opener as she allowed just three hits, one walk and an earned run while striking out four in a complete game to improve to 11-3 this season.
UMass Lowell unleashed 14 hits, led by Ferraro who batted 3 for 3 with two RBI and a run while junior LF Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) went 2 for 4 with two runs. Sophomore RF Katie Mazure (Burlington, Mass.) also batted 2 for 4 while senior CF Hilary Hopkins (San Diego, Ca.) batted 2 for 3 with a run.
Sophomore P Chelsea Shea slipped to 8-8 as she surrendered 14 hits, four earned runs and no walks while striking out two. She also batted 1 for 2 with one run and one RBI.
The River Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, led by a solo home run by Boris in the first and a two-run shot by Ferraro in the second. Hopkins added an RBI bunt in the fourth.
In the nightcap, junior C Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) cracked a three-run home run to left field to give UMass Lowell a 4-0 cushion in the third inning. Junior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) opened the inning with a double and scored shortly after on a single by sophomore 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.).
Senior 1B Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass.) singled to shortstop to set up Panarelli’s home run. Pace pulled a run back in the bottom half of the third behind an RBI single from freshman 3B Rachel McMahon.
The Setters added another run in the fourth when a fielder’s choice by junior CF Sabrina Gonzalez scored Shea, but UMass Lowell scored two more in the seventh – an RBI double by Boris and a sacrifice fly from Panarelli for a 6-2 lead.
Ross batted 3 for 4 with two runs to lead the River Hawks while Panarelli batted 1 for 3 with four RBI. McMahon and junior Lauren Bell each batted 2 for 3 to lead the Setters.
Boris improved to 20-14 as she allowed seven hits, two earned runs and two walks while striking out four. Sophomore Colby Hochmuth took the loss and slipped to 5-5 as she scattered six hits, four earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
