Results
Sophomore Jeff Veiga (Lowell, Mass) placed third in the 10,000 meters and led three UMass Lowell athletes to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship Thursday and Friday at the 116th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Veiga, competing in the College Men’s 10,000 meters division, placed third with a time of 29:46.51 and trailed only runner-up Glarius Rop of American International (29:22.10) and champion Ben Cheruiyot of Auburn (29:18.58).
Veiga’s result currently stands ninth on the latest NCAA Division II list, virtually securing his spot in the NCAA Championship.
Senior Donte Brown (Raynham, Mass.) likely secured his place at the NCAAs as he placed 11th overall – third among Division II entries – in the College Men’s 400 meter hurdles as he posted a time of 52.12 seconds.
The result is currently the sixth-fastest in Division II this season and second-fastest individual finish in UMass Lowell history.
Freshman Candace Greene (Annapolis, Md.) also hit an NCAA provisional mark for the second time this season as she placed fourth in the College Women’s Eastern Shot Put with a season-best throw of 45 feet, 0.5 inches.
Greene’s throw catapulted her from 29th to 20th on the Division II list. Jane Swenson of Penn State won the event with a distance of 52’ 6.0’’ while Moriah Young of Maryland took second (48’ 3.5’’) and April Doyle of Kutztown third (46’ 4.0’’).
Junior Angus MacDonald (Methuen, Mass.) placed 11th overall and second among Division II runners in the College Men’s 5,000 Meters Championship with a time of 14:16.85.
MacDonald’s time ranks as the eighth-best result in UMass Lowell history. He is currently fifth on the Division II list with a time of 14:09.59, run last week at the Mount San Antonio College Relays.
Freshman Samantha Otten (Ashland, Mass.) took 13th overall and third among Division II and III throwers in the College Women’s Javelin with a throw of 132’ 8.0’’.
Senior Cory Murray (Methuen, Mass.) placed 17th overall and tops among the seven Division II and III throwers in the College Men’s Eastern Shot Put. Murray threw for a distance of 50’ 1.75’’.
The remainder of UMass Lowell’s men and women compete at the Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational Friday at 4:00.
