Ross Walk-off HR Lifts UMass Lowell Over Le Moyne, 5-4

Senior 1B Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass.) belted a lead-off solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift UMass Lowell over Le Moyne College, 5-4, Thursday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference softball clash at River View Field.

The victory was the eighth straight for UMass Lowell, which improved to 29-18 overall and 15-10 in the NE-10 entering Saturday’s twin bill at Pace (12:00) and Sunday’s at Adelphi (12:00) to wrap the regular season.

Le Moyne suffered its seventh consecutive loss and slipped to 13-20 overall and 11-10 in the Conference. The Dolphins host Bentley Saturday (12:00) and Stonehill Sunday (12:00).

Due to the inclement weather, UMass Lowell and Le Moyne will only meet one another once this season.

Junior P Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) earned the win to improve to 19-14 as she scattered seven hits, four walks and one earned run over seven innings. Freshman Sarah Harrison (Cobleskill, N.Y.) took the loss as she allowed eight hits, five walks and three earned runs while striking out eight.

Sophomore CF Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.) batted 2 for 4 with two runs while junior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) went 2 for 2 with one run and one RBI.

Sophomore CF Demetra Kermidas (Binghamton, N.Y.) led Le Moyne, hitting 4 for 5 with two runs and a double while freshman 2B Liz Weber (Bay Shore, N.Y.) batted 2 for 4.Junior C Morgan Edmondson (Johnson City, N.Y.) went 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI.

UMass Lowell twice fell behind by a run in the late innings, but rallied to level the score. Le Moyne took a 3-2 lead in the fifth behind an RBI double by Edmondson, scoring junior DH Kelcie Cashel (Lacona, N.Y.). Boris, however, led off the bottom half of the fifth with a double, advanced to third on a ground out and reached home on a double steal.

The Dolphins took a 4-3 lead in the eighth when senior Amanda Daum (Auburn, N.Y.) singled with the bases loaded to score Kermidas. The River Hawks leveled again when Daniels doubled to left field and scored on a single by Guy.

UMass Lowell held Le Moyne in the top of the ninth to set up Ross’ game-winning home run.
