The UMass Lowell softball team, now winners of the last seven straight, outscored Franklin Pierce 13-0 over a two-game stretch on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Ravens 8-0 and 5-0 in a conference doubleheader in Rindge, N.H.

Pitchers Rachel Schafler (Floral Park, N.Y.) and Elyssa Boris (Gardner, Mass.) both threw a complete game, with Schafler in for game one and Boris following in the second. Sophomore 2B Krista MacKenzie (Ipswich, Mass.) went 5-8 on the day with four RBI.

With the win, the River Hawks improve to 28-18 overall with a 14-10 clip in conference action. The Ravens fall to 10-26 on the year and 8-16 in NE-10 play.

In the early game, the River Hawks began the first of four two-run innings in the third on a Franklin Pierce miscue, before continuing the offensive momentum in the fifth. Junior SS Meagan Guy (Berlin, Conn.) led off the inning with a triple and was brought home on a sacrifice bunt by senior 1B Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass.). The run was followed up with Boris' 11th home run of the year.

In the sixth, MacKenzie hit a two-run single to left field to put the squad up 6-0 and the seventh saw sophomore Katie Mazure (Burlington, Mass.) bat in Lindsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, Mass.) before being brought home by Ashley Daniels (Medford, Mass.), giving the River Hawks the 8-0 lead they would hold onto through the end of the game.

Schafler went the full seven innings, allowing just five hits while striking out seven. Franklin Pierce's Kayla Johnson went five innings and recorded the loss.

In the second game of the afternoon, UMass Lowell scored one run in all but two of the innings, while Boris threw a three-hitter on the day. The Ravens' Jess Wiley was credited with the loss.

In addition to MacKenzie's three hits in the game, Boris was also strong at the plate, going 3-4 with an RBI and Panarelli enjoyed a multi-hit outing, going 2-4.

Panarelli scored MacKenzie on a single up the middle in the first to put UMass Lowell on the board early, but the squad wouldn't score again until the fourth inning. It was then, with two outs, that MacKenzie collected another RBI to make it a two-run game.

In the fifth, yesterday's home run hero Caelyn Ford (Dracut, Mass.) had an RBI double to stretch the lead to three runs. Ross hit a two-out double, allowing her to score on a Boris single through the left side in the following at bat.

The squad finished out strong as MacKenzie tacked on another insurance run, scoring Ford on a double to center field to make it a 5-0 game before game's end.

The River Hawks are back in action on Friday at home, as they will host the Dolphins of LeMoyne in a rescheduled outing from this past Saturday. The conference doubleheader is slated to begin at 2 p.m. on River View Field and will be the team's final regular season home game of the season.
